Homemaker and Breadwinner

Hey Sweeties!

I know I’m talking about childfree housewives because that’s who I am and what I know best. But we all know that with or without children is not a reality today whether in the United States or the rest of the Western world. Most women are forced or willing to work to support their families or husbands and simply to be financially independent.

Most women work outside the home today. The number of women who stay at home is growing smaller every year, and the number has been decreasing since the 1960s. It doesn’t show any signs of increasing, either. In the United States, it takes two salaries today to maintain even a modest standard of living. Add to those sad financial facts that the divorce rate has been increasing at virtually the same alarming rate over the same period of time and it isn’t hard to understand why women are in the position of being both the homemaker and the breadwinner simultaneously. It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible either. What seems difficult is to be able to fully blossom in this type of scenario.

It's Time To Break Your Life

There is no “one-size-fits-all” formula for successfully accomplishing the homemaker/breadwinner balancing act. I think one of the main “secrets,” though, is to learn to break life into categories or cubbyholes. When you are at work, you are at work fully and completely, and when you are at home, you are at home fully and completely. Men seem to be much better at this business of categorizing their lives than women, but it’s something that women who are both homemakers and breadwinners must learn to do and do well in order to fulfill the demands of both roles successfully or at least adequately. It is important when there are only two of you in your family to find a balance at home. Without it, separation is just around the corner!

Women who are both homemakers and breadwinners are busy beyond belief. There is rarely a minute when they aren’t rushing here or rushing there. They are mentally and emotionally running as fast as they can just to keep from getting any further behind. In the process of all of this hurry, hurry, hurry, these women forget to take time to take care of themselves. They eat the wrong things at the wrong times, and they rarely get their proper rest. So taking the time to take care of themselves is another feat that the homemaker/breadwinner must learn to do and do well, or burnout will surely happen.
